First of all, we want to recognize that traveling to Tunisia is an enormous undertaking from the U.S., and we want to extend an equal (if not larger) “thank you” to everyone willing and able to join us in the beautiful country Hedi grew up in. With that in mind, we want to do everything we can to remove all question marks and worries and have compiled here our best effort at a comprehensive list of answers to questions you may have. We hope you find this helpful and that it gives you more confidence in your upcoming trip! Should we have forgotten anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us so we can help.
Where is Tunisia and what is it like?
Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa. There are actually some parts of Tunisia that are closer to the European continent than some parts of Italy! Tunis and Bizerte, Hedi’s hometown, sit along the stunning Mediterranean sea and have gorgeous beaches that will be at the perfect temperature for enjoying in June.
Tunisia is a Muslim-majority country but is considered one of the most secular-leaning in the world. The religion is woven into the culture rather than strict daily observance. Since the 1950s, Tunisia has been a leader in advancing women’s rights among Muslim countries, and women are not expected or required to wear headscarves outside of mosques. Alcohol is legal and widely available. The only thing to be sure to avoid while you are visiting are public displays of affection.
Which airport should I fly into?
The main airport in Tunisia, and the one closest to all wedding festivities, is Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN). It is accessible from the U.S. via all major European airports.
Where should I stay?
We will provide more details on specific hotel block reservations once they are confirmed. We will have this information for you as soon as possible, hopefully by December. For now, we recommend staying at one of the major hotels in the Gammarth neighborhood of Tunis. For ease of transportation, we hope to arrange for all guests from the U.S. to stay at the same hotel or hotels very close to each other.
If you’d like to take a preliminary look, please check out the following hotels:
- Four Seasons Tunis
- The Residence Tunis
- Mövenpick Hotel Gammarth Tunis
What is the schedule of wedding events and when should I plan to be in Tunisia?
The wedding itself will take place on June 18, 2027. For now, we plan to have a rehearsal dinner the night before on June 17. We will let you know about any additional events as they are confirmed. We recommend arriving in Tunis no later than Tuesday, June 15, and leaving no earlier than Sunday, June 20.
We would love for all of our U.S. guests to join us at the rehearsal dinner.
How can we get around while we are there?
There are ample taxis and the most widely used rideshare app is called InDrive. Please note that you will need to pay in cash for rides. If you have an international driving permit, you can also rent a car to drive with an American driver’s license. Your hotel can also help with arranging transportation to anywhere in the city. For wedding events, we will provide transportation for everyone from their hotels to the event venues.
What is there to do in Tunis?
So much! Tunis (Tunisia’s capital) is an amazing and history-filled city with plenty to fill a few days or a week. Our recommendations include:
- A guided tour of the Carthaginian ruins
- A visit to the Bardo Museum (the world’s largest collection of Roman mosaics)
- Walking around Sidi Bou Said, which was established in 2026 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Explore Tunis’ old town, the Medina, which has alleyways of street vendors, restaurants and cafes
- Walk along the strand in Gammarth and La Marsa, two of Tunis’ most beautiful neighborhoods
